Slow Going

Well, I had my surgery last monday and I am doing ok. I have my good days and bad days. Last monday Dr. S went in to give the midline of my face a tune up. I had developed a cyst in part of the midline area of my face most likely due to past trauma of infections, grafts and past surgeries. Anyway, the cyst had to be taken out and then Dr. S had to rebuild my left midface area. He did this by grafting bone from both sides of my jaw. 20 years ago he grafted bone from my head. But he could see that the cyst had caused bone loss and my cleft palate(I was born with a severe cleft lip and palate on the left) was opening up. So then he had to try to stop the palate from collapsing in. He fixed this by putting in implants in the area of my cleft and then repairing the opening. Last he had to take out the equipment in my face that he had put in for the orriginal grafts 20 years ago. He had to take out all of the titanium plates and screws because the bone on the right side had grafted together and I no longer needed the plates.

I have to say that the Le Fortes surgery that I had 20 years ago was like the chamber of horrors--6 long painful months of recovery. Now having a similar surgery, it was much better. I think all of the surgical techniques that have come along in 20 years have made it so much easier. I am still in a ton of pain, tired so much and all of the medications make me so nautious, but this has still been so much easier--which fills my heart with happiness to think that little children who are cleft affected will experience much easier recoveries than I did as a child because of how far we keep getting in medical research and technology. Thank you god.
ok, well that is all for now, I am already tired again.
